Introduction

The Workshop, conceived as a Masters degree on High Stage Specialisation for Opera Singers, was born as the shared hope between the Monaco Master and the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá to carry out a one-of-a-kind project in Spain, pioneering in bringing opera close to the university sphere.

The project started shaping up in the Spring of 2004 and became a reality in June of 2005 with the production of the gala that brought the first edition of the Workshop to an end, to great acclaim of audience and critic.

For the announcement of the Workshop 6,000 polyptychs and 500 posters were distributed in which all the information was contained and that were sent to the main training and musical production centres in Europe and some specific ones in other continents. Some ads were inserted in specialised magazines (Scherzo and Ópera Actual) as well.

Trying to get different institutions involved that could add their spaces and teachers to the Workshop has been one of the strategic aims of the project, favouring with it the idea of process and construction that there is from the study of a score to the production of the opera.

During the development of the 2008 project and for the 2009 project, we rely on the collaboration of the Royal Theatre, with the sponsoring of the Ministry of Culture through the General Direction of Cooperation and Cultural Communication (that has given scholarships to all active students), the Department of Culture of the Community of Madrid, and with the private sponsoring of the brewing company Mahou.
