
Giancarlo del Monaco is one of the most prestigious stage directors in the international opera scene. He made his debut as stage director in the Greek theatre in Siracuse next to his father Mario del Monaco, on July 1, 1965, with the opera Samson et Dalila (Saint-Saens). From 1965 to 1966, he was stage director assistant in Berlin's Deutsche Oper and, from then until 1968, he collaborated with the best stage directors of the moment: Günther Rennert, Wieland Wagner and Walter Felsenstein in Stuttgart. In 1970 he was appointed personal assistant to Rudolf Gamsjäger, general director of the Wiener Staatsoper, position he occupied until 1973. From that moment on he would develop, together with his career as stage director, his facet as governor superior in the Staatstheater in Kassel (1980-1982), in the Macerata Festival (1986-1988), in the Oper der Bundesstadt in Bonn (1992-1997) and in the Opèra in Nice (1997-2001). During his career he has received many prizes and international mentions, and the main opera theatres in the world have hosted his stagings: Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Teatro de la Ópera in Bilbao, Teatro Comunale in Bolonia, Opera Theatre in Bonn, the Bregenz Festival, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Teatro Bellini in Catania, Opera Theatre in Cologne, Royal Theatre in Madrid, Teatro della Scala in Milan, Metropolitan Theatre in New York, Frankfurt, Geneva, Genoa, Hamburg, Leipzig, Los Angeles, Munich, Naples, Orange, Schwetzingen, Seville, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, Turin, Venice, Washington, Vienna, Zurich, etc. He has taken another five productions to the stage in the Metropolitan Theatre in New York: La Fanciulla del West, Stiffelio, Madame Butterfly, Simon Boccanegra and La Forza del Destino. All of them were broadcasted and some of them edited in video by Deutsche Grammophon and Sony Classical. His repertoire covers more than 120 operas.
In June 2005, he received the Medal of Honour of the University of Alcalá from the Dean, Virgilio Zapatero, and in 2007, he was appointed Honorary Professor by the University of Alcalá.
